Purple Rain

Every few months I like to give myself a little hair refresh. Nothing drastic or permanent, just a touch of lavender or cotton candy to switch things up for a few weeks. And no better time to do so than the start of a new year! I didn’t make any resolutions this year, mainly because I’m already too busy and can’t bear to add any more pressure on myself. Kind of a cop out, I know.

I almost never wear all black, but because of my new lavender ‘do, I opted for a sleeker ensemble than usual. I found this oversized leather vest at a vintage shop years ago. I was drawn to it because it had been up-cycled—meaning the shop owner had refreshed it’s original state, adding the metallic paint and embellishments. I absolutely love up-cycling clothing. It’s an easy, fun, and sustainable way to wear something new. Here a few super simple up-cycling ideas that require no more than a needle and thread or some fabric glue.

  1. Switch out buttons or hardware on coats and jackets. Or try a toggle closure!
  2. Shorten hems on pants or skirts. Try turning a pair of wide legs pants into culottes.
  3. Paint or stencil on the back of denim or leather jackets. I made this one for my wedding.
  4. Add studs or pins to collars, lapels, or pockets. You can see my version here, and don’t forget Gucci is doing it too!
  5. Sew, pin, or glue patches to jackets or jeans. The possibilities on this are endless!

If you need help picking out pins and patches, I gotchu covered with this post  here. What’s your favorite quick and easy way to refresh your clothing or style?
