How to Toughen Up A Feminine Dress

Just because the season is changing doesn’t mean I’m giving up my bright colors and feminine florals. I always have a really hard time letting go of the previous season (and remembering how to dress for cooler temps). But it’s especially difficult transitioning from summer to fall because summer means FUN and fall means winter is just around the cornerĀ šŸ˜„.

For this post I tried toughening up an uber feminine dress with some rugged boots. I have seen other gals do it, but wasn’t sure I could pull it off. You can balance a piece that is super feminine with some tough touches by adding a leather jacket, combat boots, or some structured jewelry. For this experiment, I chose the boots. I have raved about these boots before, so I’ll let you read it here rather than blab about them again. Unfortunately they are no longer available, but I’ve linked a similar pair here (and below). I think there’s something intriguing and unique in pairing unexpected items together: leather jacket with a ruffled dress, a ripped tee with a sequin skirt, or a long dress with tough boots.

I kept the rest of the outfit relatively simple: western concho earrings from Tate New York, and a straw lifeguard-style hat from J. Crew. I also think a wool wide brim hat would’ve worked really nicely with this concept. The yellow aviators also add a Hunter S Thompson twist, which I think caps off the feminine meets masculine vibe quite nicely.

Shout out to Tandem Vintage for their expert eye in uniting me with this floral watercolor dream dress. It’s really special and rare when someone from afar picks out a dress that perfectly fits your personal style (and body!). I’m seriously considering making a trip out to Minneapolis to visit their storefront. In the meantime I’ll just drool over everything on their Instagram.

  1. This look inspires so much jealousy! I love the bright kind of late sixties florals, but I feel so out of my element when I try to rock them. So, I will just continue to admire them on you. One thing that peeked my interest…you said someone else picked this dress for you; meaning the person or persons who are behind Tandem Vintage? I’m curious on how you guys connected. Did you already know of them or did they just reach out to you? The reason I am asking is because a few months back I found a dress and when posting it, I kept thinking about how great you would look in it and how I’d love to see how you styled it. I would love some pointers on what the proper etiquette is when reaching out to bloggers such as yourself.
